Opposition Lawmakers Plan Protest Over Home Minister’s Response and Student Demonstrations

Kathmandu— Members of Parliament from opposition parties are scheduled to hold a protest at Makar Dwar in New Delhi at 10:30 am on Tuesday, triggered by Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statements and an ongoing dispute over donations for the Ram Temple. The demonstration occurs during a continuing impasse between the government and opposition regarding alleged police actions against student protesters in the capital and disruptions to parliamentary proceedings during the Monsoon Session. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, urging him not to avoid Parliament now that Shah is prepared to address questions raised by the opposition.

Parliamentary Impasse Deepens

The current standoff has repeatedly disrupted Parliament, with opposition members demanding answers from the government and specifically seeking a response from Amit Shah regarding recent events. The government has offered a debate on the matter, with the Home Minister expected to participate. Kiren Rijiju stated via social media that Rahul Gandhi had been requesting a response from Shah for days and should now engage in the discussion since one is forthcoming.

Gandhi Demands Accountability

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has intensified his criticism, directly questioning who authorized police action against student protesters in Delhi. Addressing a press conference, Gandhi demanded clarity on whether the authorization stemmed from culpability or incompetence within the government. He alleged that students were subjected to pellet guns and lathis (batons) during the protests.

Conflicting Positions on Home Minister’s Response

Gandhi dismissed arguments suggesting the opposition seeks only a general statement from Shah in Parliament, emphasizing the need for clarification regarding who authorized the police action. He posited that if Shah ordered the action, he is responsible for violence against youth; if unaware, he is incompetent and should resign. Rijiju countered by accusing the opposition of stalling parliamentary proceedings while reiterating the government’s willingness to debate the student movement, provided the Home Minister’s statement isn’t disrupted.

With the Monsoon Session nearing its conclusion, both ruling and opposition parties continue to blame each other for the ongoing deadlock as the protest at Makar Dwar is set to take place.
