Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges in UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing

Kathmandu— Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty Friday in Manhattan federal court to two charges related to the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson: interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. Thompson, 50, was fatally shot on a New York City street in December 2024, triggering a five-day manhunt that ended with Mangione’s arrest at a McDonald's restaurant in Pennsylvania. Mangione admitted to researching the company and targeting Thompson after posing as an investor.

Details of the Federal Plea

Mangione appeared before the judge on Friday and pleaded guilty to both federal offenses. He recounted how he researched UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference and emailed the company, falsely identifying himself as an investor, in order to gather details that would allow him to target Thompson. During the hearing, Mangione directly admitted to shooting Thompson in Manhattan, acknowledging the act was illegal.

Separate State Charges Pending

The federal charges are separate from those filed at the state level, which include second-degree murder and firearm offenses. Mangione previously entered a not guilty plea to these state charges, and that stance has not changed. A trial for the state-level charges is currently scheduled to begin next month.

Further details regarding sentencing in the federal case have not yet been released.
