Kathmandu— Authorities in Mustang district are advising travelers along the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road – often referred to as the ‘lifeline’ of Gandaki Province – to proceed with caution following weeks of continuous heavy rainfall. Landslides and river erosion have damaged sections of the highway, disrupting traffic and posing risks to those journeying through the area. The District Administration Office issued the warning after recent floods triggered landslides in multiple locations, obstructing the road and prompting increased safety measures.

Road Conditions and Recent Disruptions

Continuous heavy rainfall has severely damaged several sections of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road due to landslides and erosion along the Kali Gandaki River. Landslides occurred at Baisari in Raghuganga Rural Municipality, as well as Sukebagar and Mahabhir in neighboring Myagdi district, blocking the roadway. Rockfalls are also reported near Ghansa and Badarjung Bhir in Thasang Rural Municipality.

Safety Measures and Travel Restrictions

Chief District Officer Ajita Sharma urged travelers to remain vigilant and heed safety advisories, noting that nighttime travel poses an increased risk due to potential floods and landslides. The Ghansa Police Post is actively providing information on road conditions to tourists and the public. Authorities have tightened restrictions on night-time travel in recent weeks based on forecasts of heavy rainfall.

Ongoing Repair Efforts and Vulnerable Sections

The Kali Gandaki Corridor Beni-Jomsom Road Project acknowledges that increased water flow from heavy rains causes erosion, necessitating ongoing repair and maintenance work. Tejaswi Sharma, the project’s chief, explained that crews prioritize reopening obstructed sections immediately after rainfall. Approximately 22 kilometers of the 76-kilometer Jomsom-Beni section is considered particularly vulnerable to floods and landslides due to steep terrain, underground water sources, and weak geological formations.

Repair work continues on affected sections of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road, with authorities monitoring conditions closely during the monsoon season. Travelers are advised to stay informed about potential hazards and adhere to safety guidelines.
