Kathmandu— Veronique Lorenzo, the European Union’s ambassador to Nepal, concluded her tenure with a farewell call on Foreign Affairs Minister Shishir Khanal at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu. During their meeting, the pair discussed Nepal-EU relations, mutual interests including cooperation on mountain and water issues, migration, and Nepal's graduation from Least Developed Country status, as well as cultural exchange programs.

Diplomatic Exchange & Bilateral Relations

Ambassador Lorenzo expressed gratitude for the strong relationship with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, praising its helpfulness, activity, and responsiveness. She also conveyed her satisfaction with the leadership and guidance provided by Minister Khanal. In return, Minister Khanal thanked Ambassador Lorenzo for her openness, honesty, and support throughout her time in Nepal, acknowledging the assistance she had provided to both the nation and the ministry itself.

Areas of Potential Cooperation

The EU ambassador indicated a strong interest in collaborating with Nepal on agendas related to mountains and water resources. Minister Khanal highlighted that mountain-related issues are a priority for the Nepali government, noting that Nepal will host the second edition of 'Sagarmatha Sambaad' in the coming year. Furthermore, Ambassador Lorenzo outlined plans for EU cooperation regarding safe, systematic, and decent migration, which Minister Khanal welcomed, requesting detailed information to facilitate further study and formulate Nepal’s position.

LDC Graduation & Economic Support

Discussions also centered on the suspension of Nepal's planned graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status to a middle-income developing country. Ambassador Lorenzo pledged EU support towards this goal, urging Nepal to submit substantive action plans and necessary details. Minister Khanal emphasized that safe and decent migration is a key priority for Nepal, with the government committed to protecting Nepali citizens living abroad.

Cultural Exchange & Artistic Promotion

The two officials exchanged views on promoting Nepali art, culture, and civilization, as well as upholding openness and freedom of expression. Ambassador Lorenzo requested support from the Ministry for an exhibition focused on Newari art, a request to which Minister Khanal responded with a commitment to promote Nepal’s cultural heritage.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and exploring further avenues for collaboration.
