Buttigieg Courts South Carolina Voters as Potential 2028 Run Looms

Kathmandu— Pete Buttigieg visited South Carolina this weekend, signaling a potential second run for president in 2028. The trip aimed to reintroduce him to the state’s electorate – particularly Black voters who largely did not support him in 2020 – and highlight his work securing federal funding for local projects as President Joe Biden's Transportation Secretary. The visit included appearances at a church, historically Black university, and NAACP event, where Buttigieg emphasized his vision for the country’s future and addressed concerns about voting rights.

A Warm Reception Signals Potential Shift

Buttigieg received standing ovations during events in South Carolina, notably when credited with securing $22.7 million in federal funds for a revitalization project in Orangeburg. The enthusiastic response marked a significant change from his 2020 campaign, where he struggled to gain traction with Black voters and finished fourth in the state’s primary. The warm welcome was particularly notable given South Carolina's new position as the first Democratic presidential primary contest in 2028, making its electorate crucial for any candidate.

Winning Over Key Demographics

Jaime Harrison, a former Democratic National Committee chair and South Carolina Democratic Party chairman, stressed the importance of Black voter support. “You need to demonstrate that you can win Black voters,” he said. “If you can’t win Black voters, you can’t be the nominee of our party.” Buttigieg acknowledged this necessity, emphasizing his commitment to addressing issues important to the community and building trust through consistent engagement.

Highlighting Accomplishments and Vision

During a speech at an NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner, Buttigieg warned of a country in “big trouble” while outlining his vision for the future. He argued that Democrats must address both economic frustrations and systemic issues within the political system itself. “I have come to believe that the kitchen table cannot be improved unless we are also reforming the institutional and political floor on which that kitchen table sits,” he stated. Orangeburg Mayor Michael Butler praised Buttigieg’s message, saying it offered “hope” for the community.

Early Competition in 2028

Buttigieg is not the only potential contender already making inroads in South Carolina. California Governor Gavin Newsom, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Representative Ro Khanna, and Senator Cory Booker have also visited the state as a large Democratic field begins to take shape. Former Vice President Kamala Harris possesses existing ties within the state’s political landscape. The increased attention reflects the growing importance of South Carolina in the early stages of the 2028 presidential race.

Buttigieg maintains he has not made a final decision about running, stating his current focus is on 2026. However, his trip to South Carolina – following a similar visit to Nevada – suggests serious consideration and preparation for a potential campaign.
