China and Egypt Deepen Strategic Partnership Across Multiple Sectors

Kathmandu— China and Egypt are strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership as they celebrate seven decades of diplomatic relations, with collaboration extending into key sectors like clean energy, digital infrastructure, aerospace, and agriculture. Established in 1956, the relationship gained further momentum in 2014 when it was formally elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership, and again this year with Egypt’s accession to BRICS membership. Through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and Egypt Vision 2030, China is playing an increasingly significant role in Egypt's development through investment and collaborative projects.

Infrastructure Development Takes Center Stage

A prime example of this cooperation is the Central Business District (CBD) in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, constructed by China State Construction Engineering Corporation. The CBD features 20 skyscrapers, including the Iconic Tower, which currently stands as Africa's tallest building at 385.8 meters. Another landmark project is the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system for 10th of Ramadan City, a major industrial and residential hub east of Cairo; this BRI initiative aims to modernize transport and improve urban mobility.

The China-Egypt Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone has also become a significant driver of economic growth, attracting over 200 companies by the end of June and creating more than 10,000 direct jobs, with many more indirect opportunities supported.

Technological Advancement and Space Exploration

China’s technological contributions extend to Egypt's space program. In December 2023, China successfully launched EgyptSat 2, making Egypt the first African nation with complete in-house capabilities for satellite assembly, integration, and testing. This achievement underscores a growing collaboration in high-tech industries.

The Luban Workshop program, focused on vocational training, has established an employment training base within the Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, further enhancing skills development and job creation.

Cultural Exchange and Archaeological Collaboration

Beyond economic and technological ties, cultural exchange is also flourishing. The exhibition “On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt,” held at the Shanghai Museum from July 2024 to August 2025, showcased 788 Egyptian artifacts alongside ancient Chinese relics, attracting a total of 2.77 million visitors. A Sino-Egyptian joint archaeological project is currently underway at Saqqara, utilizing digital scanning and photography to research thousands of wooden mummy coffins unearthed at the site.

Energy Sector Sees Increased Chinese Investment

Chinese companies are becoming prominent players in Egypt’s energy sector as the country seeks to meet surging electricity demand while leveraging its substantial wind and solar resources. The Egyptian government has set ambitious renewable energy targets under its Vision 2030 development plan, creating opportunities for further collaboration with China.

The ongoing projects and initiatives demonstrate a commitment from both sides to deepen their strategic partnership and foster mutual growth across various sectors.
