Kathmandu— Chinese President Xi Jinping landed in Bishkek on Sunday for a state visit to Kyrgyzstan and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2026, marking what he described as a 'golden period' of rapid development between China and Kyrgyzstan. Upon arrival, Xi emphasized that over the past 34 years since diplomatic relations were established, bilateral ties have reached new heights in trade, people-to-people exchanges, and major infrastructure projects.

Time-Honored Friendship

Xi Jinping highlighted the long-standing friendship between China and Kyrgyzstan, noting that their relationship has withstood international challenges to reach a comprehensive strategic partnership. He emphasized that over 34 years of diplomatic relations, bilateral trade volume and people-to-people exchanges have reached new highs, with major projects like the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway successfully implemented.

High-Quality Development of Ties

Ahead of his visit, Xi published a signed article titled 'Jointly Opening up New Prospects for the High-Quality Development of China-Kyrgyzstan Relations.' He emphasized that high-level exchanges have provided clear strategic guidance and closer coordination in international affairs. Kyrgyz economist Iskender Sharsheev noted that the two countries enjoy enormous potential for cooperation, particularly in fields such as digital economy, green energy, and artificial intelligence.

Hopes for Greater Cooperation

People across Kyrgyzstan view Xi's visit as an opportunity to deepen political trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and boost people-to-people ties. Former Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Alikbek Jekshenkulov highlighted that mutual understanding has kept bilateral friendship enduring and vibrant. Professor Almazbek Akmataliev stated that in today’s international environment, Xi's call for further carrying forward the Shanghai Spirit has become increasingly relevant.
