China’s Sci-Tech Hubs Forge Tighter Lab-to-Market Ties for Industrial Upgrade

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— China is accelerating the integration of scientific advancements into its production lines by strengthening ties between research institutions, companies, and regions. The expansion of innovation hubs in Beijing (Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei), Shanghai (Yangtze River Delta), and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area marks a shift from single-city breakthroughs to coordinated regional development, as outlined at the 2025 Central Economic Work Conference.

Linking Research with Industrial Capacity

The three centers are extending beyond individual cities to bring concentrated research resources closer to industrial capacity and market demand. Beijing has established over 200 service platforms for commercializing research findings, while the Greater Bay Area facilitates cross-border flows of research resources, enabling Hong Kong and Macao's research to be commercialized on the mainland. Shanghai is enhancing technology refinement through public AI-driven scientific research platforms.

Removing Bottlenecks Across Innovation Chain

Each center has developed unique strengths: Beijing ranks among the world’s top cities for highly cited researchers, Shanghai leads in original research in physics, chemistry, and life sciences, and the Greater Bay Area excels at cross-border research collaboration. Experts call for addressing bottlenecks by producing more original breakthroughs, improving lab-to-market pathways, and enabling efficient resource flow across regions.
