Kathmandu— The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier docked at a port in eastern Thailand's Chonburi province on Wednesday, providing the ship’s approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines with their first opportunity for shore leave after nearly nine months at sea. The deployment supported U.S. operations against Iran and marked one of the longest continuous deployments in recent history.

Reports had emerged last month about deteriorating mental health among the crew, as well as shortages of key food supplies aboard the ship. The Navy downplayed these issues, and President Donald Trump commented that the Lincoln’s lengthy deployment was “not nearly long enough.” Despite this, a sailor went overboard in early August but was quickly recovered and treated by the ship's medical department.

The USS Abraham Lincoln made its way into Laem Chabang port on Wednesday morning. The crew later debarked to spend their free time in nearby Pattaya, a seaside resort city that has been frequented by U.S. military personnel since the Vietnam War era. Capt. Dan Keeler, the ship’s commanding officer, noted that the carrier's appearance was “normal for a long deployment.”

Economic Impact on Local Businesses

Local businesses in Pattaya were excited about the influx of sailors and their potential economic impact. The city’s mayor expected the visit to generate around 100 million baht ($3 million) for the city. Jaroon Kasemsantitham, a beachside restaurant owner, put up welcome banners and expressed excitement over the arrival of American customers.
