Saudi Arabia Condemns Iranian Attack on Tanker in Strait of Hormuz

Kathmandu— Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned an Iranian attack on the Sidr oil tanker, owned by its national shipping company Bahri, which resulted in the deaths of two Filipino crew members. The incident occurred as the tanker was transiting through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night. In a statement, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry emphasized the need to halt escalations and respect international maritime safety and global energy supply security.

Regional Condemnation

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from regional neighbors. Kuwait and Qatar’s foreign ministries have both stated that the incident violated international law and freedom of maritime navigation. Qatar specifically called it a “flagrant violation” and rejected using the Strait as a bargaining chip in geopolitical disputes.

Background on Attacks

The attack is one of several recent incidents involving Iranian aggression against vessels transiting through the strategic waterway, which has seen reduced traffic since the escalation of tensions. Iran has repeatedly attacked and threatened tankers without authorization, impeding energy exports from neighboring Gulf countries.

Bahri's Response

Bahri confirmed the incident on social media, stating that it remains in continuous contact with the vessel and is coordinating closely with relevant authorities. The company also noted its ongoing efforts to monitor developments related to the attack.
