US Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Mexican Jalapeno Peppers

Kathmandu— The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that at least 345 individuals in 27 US states have been affected by a salmonella outbreak tied to jalapeno peppers sourced from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico. The outbreak, which has led to the hospitalization of at least 36 people but no deaths, is linked to chilli peppers distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors and sold through various Mexican food restaurant chains including Chipotle and Qdoba.

Outbreak Details

Salmonella bacteria are responsible for approximately 1.35 million infections in the US annually, with outbreaks often linked to a variety of sources such as cucumbers, eggs, unpasteurised milk, fresh basil, geckos, and pet bearded dragons. Infected individuals typically experience symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within hours or days after exposure.

Recall and Removal

Coast Citrus Distributors has recalled the affected jalapeno peppers and is notifying its customers, including prominent Mexican food restaurant chains. Chipotle Mexican Grill removed jalapenos from some of its restaurants on Tuesday, while Qdoba proactively removed them from all locations on Wednesday. CDC officials stated that these establishments are no longer considered a current risk to consumers in this outbreak.

Impact and Further Investigation

Shares of Chipotle fell nearly 10 percent on Tuesday amid the salmonella scare, adding to broader challenges from inflation affecting customer traffic. The FDA is investigating whether any jalapenos were distributed through grocery stores and may announce additional actions if necessary.
