PM Modi Urges Citizens to Promote Handlooms Through Social Media

Kathmandu— On National Handloom Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Indian citizens to promote traditional handloom textiles by sharing 'Get Ready With Me' (GRWM) videos and using specific hashtags. The call came ahead of the 12th celebration of National Handloom Day on August 7 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi.

Celebrations and Awards

The Ministry of Textiles will celebrate National Handloom Day with a series of events, including the presentation of Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and National Handloom Awards. President Droupadi Murmu will attend as Chief Guest, alongside Union Minister Giriraj Singh and other dignitaries. The event will also feature an exhibition of award-winning handloom products and live demonstrations of traditional weaving techniques.

Government's Role in Promoting Handlooms

The government has emphasized the importance of India’s handloom sector, which supports over 35 lakh people, with women comprising more than 70% of the workforce. The Ministry of Textiles aims to preserve and promote these traditions while fostering sustainable production practices. Since its inception in 2015, National Handloom Day has served as a platform to celebrate the artistry and dedication of handloom weavers.

Gujarat's Contribution

The state of Gujarat stands out for its rich handloom tradition, with crafts like Patola and Kutch weaves gaining international recognition. With government support and modern design innovations, the sector has grown to support over 12,000 artisans and generate business exceeding Rs 51.07 crore.
