Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Hospitalized for Medical Procedure

Kathmandu— Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is currently undergoing medical checks and a procedure, prompting a statement from the government that he will remain under observation for two days. The announcement was made Monday by Senior Press Secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, who indicated the examinations and procedures were recommended by a team of medical specialists but provided no further details regarding the nature of the treatment. Anwar, 79, has served as prime minister since November 2022 and underwent a routine checkup in January which confirmed he was in good health.

Medical History

Prior to this recent hospitalization, Anwar Ibrahim has received medical attention for back and shoulder issues. In June 2018, he was hospitalized due to shoulder and back pain, followed by spinal surgery in Istanbul the subsequent month. He had also been scheduled for surgery on his right shoulder to address a rotator cuff injury. However, there is currently no indication that Monday’s procedure is related to these previous conditions.

Government Statement

Tunku Nashrul Abaidah released a statement requesting prayers for Anwar Ibrahim's health and recovery. “Let us pray that all matters relating to YAB Prime Minister’s examinations and procedures are made easier and that he is blessed with lasting good health so that he can return to carrying out his duties as usual in the near future, God willing,” Nashrul said.

As of Monday, officials have not disclosed any further information about the medical procedure or Anwar Ibrahim's condition beyond confirming he remains under observation.
