Four bills – the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, and the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 – were introduced despite the ongoing protests.

Parliamentary Disruption and Adjournment

The Lok Sabha has experienced repeated disruptions throughout the current Monsoon Session, with six of eight bills already passed without full debate. Monday’s proceedings saw further unrest as opposition MPs voiced their concerns about alleged police misconduct during student demonstrations and accusations surrounding donations to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Opposition Demands Accountability

Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav criticized the government, questioning the use of force against protestors and raising concerns over financial transparency. He specifically questioned the government’s stance on the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill, suggesting it was a means to control institutions and seize assets. “We ask the government the question of why lathis were used, tear gas shells were fired, and electric shocks were administered,” Yadav said.

Concerns Over FCRA and Civil Society

CPI(M) MP John Brittas echoed these concerns, demanding clarification on the Jantar Mantar incident and accusing the government of attempting to pass legislation without addressing opposition grievances. He described the proposed FCRA as having “draconian provisions” intended to stifle civil society organizations and minority groups.

The bills introduced Monday will likely face further scrutiny and potential roadblocks as the Monsoon Session continues, with the Opposition vowing to maintain pressure on the government to address their concerns.
