Kathmandu— China’s central bank announced Friday it will release four commemorative coins on August 17th to mark the upcoming 100th birth anniversary of Jiang Zemin, who served as China's leader from 1989 to 2002. The collection includes one standard commemorative coin, two gold coins, and one silver coin, all designated as legal tender within China. The issuance aims to honor the legacy of Jiang, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 96, through a series of specially designed numismatic pieces.

Coin Specifications

The standard commemorative coin will be made of nickel-plated steel and have a face value of 1 yuan (approximately 14.73 U.S. cents), with a total mintage of 10 million pieces. It measures 25 millimeters in diameter and features China’s national emblem, the country's name, and the year of issuance on its obverse. The reverse side will display a portrait of Jiang Zemin alongside an inscription marking his birth centennial – “1926-2026” – and the coin’s face value.

Gold and Silver Variations

In addition to the standard coin, three precious metal variations will also be released. A 30-gram round gold coin, limited to a mintage of 1,000 pieces, features Jiang's portrait and has a face value of 500 yuan. An 8-gram gold coin, depicting a photograph of Jiang from his 1947 graduation at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, will have a maximum mintage of 10,000 pieces and a face value of 100 yuan. Finally, a 30-gram silver coin showcasing Jiang speaking during the “Three Stresses” education campaign in Guangdong Province in 2000 will be minted up to 20,000 units with a face value of 10 yuan.

Distribution Details

All coins share a common obverse design featuring China’s national emblem, the country name, and the year of issuance. The gold and silver commemorative coins will be distributed exclusively through the China Gold Coin Group Co., Ltd.

The release of these commemorative coins serves as a tribute to Jiang Zemin's life and contributions to China.
