Kathmandu— Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Seoul on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the strategic cooperative partnership between their nations. Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, encouraged South Korea to maintain a friendly policy towards China and leverage the upcoming 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations to further enhance ties. The discussions focused on economic cooperation, regional stability, and people-to-people exchanges as key areas for future collaboration.

Positive Trajectory in Bilateral Relations

Wang Yi highlighted the recent restoration of comprehensive relations between China and South Korea, noting that positive developments since the beginning of the year demonstrate the benefits of a pragmatic approach to their partnership. He stated that such a policy aligns with current global trends and serves South Korea’s interests. President Lee Jae Myung echoed this sentiment, expressing satisfaction with the rapid development of bilateral ties and strong growth in economic and trade cooperation.

Economic Integration and Trade

Both leaders emphasized the importance of deepening economic ties. Wang Yi urged the swift conclusion of the second phase of their Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, positioning it as a model for regional economic integration and inclusive globalization. Lee Jae Myung noted that people-to-people exchanges between the two countries are projected to exceed 10 million this year, signaling improving public perceptions of China within South Korea.

Regional Stability and Strategic Alignment

Wang Yi underscored China’s commitment to peaceful resolutions of international conflicts through dialogue, describing it as a major stabilizing force in the world. President Lee agreed that stronger strategic cooperation between South Korea and China is crucial for regional peace and stability, serving the fundamental interests of both nations. He proposed a mutually dependent and beneficial partnership based on complementary strengths in areas like economy, trade, and security.

President Lee expressed his anticipation for the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Shenzhen, China, viewing it as an opportunity to elevate the South Korea-China strategic cooperative partnership.
