Tropical Storm Moke Heads Towards Hawaii Following Recent Hurricane

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Hawaii Island is preparing for the arrival of Tropical Storm Moke, which is forecast to pass south of the Big Island overnight and into Sunday morning, bringing with it potentially heavy rainfall and strong winds. The storm’s approach comes less than a week after Hawaii was affected by Hurricane Lala, which caused significant flooding and power outages, leaving at least one person dead. Officials are urging residents to restock supplies as Moke is expected to bring another 130-250mm (5-10 inches) of rain to the southeast and windward sides of the island over the next two days.

Storm's Current Location and Strength

As of 11am Hawaii Standard Time on Saturday, Tropical Storm Moke was located approximately 684 kilometers (425 miles) south of Hilo, a city on the eastern coast of Hawaii Island. The storm is moving west-northwest at 19km/h (12mph), with maximum sustained winds around 85km/h (50mph), according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Impacts from Recent Storm

Hawaii Island is still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Lala, a Category 1 storm that brought more than 1,000mm (39 inches) of rain to some areas. This resulted in rivers overflowing their banks and widespread power outages affecting nearly 130,000 utility customers. While power has been restored to most of the island, some remote areas remain without electricity, with full restoration expected by September 8.

Preparation and Projected Rainfall

Governor Josh Green and state officials have advised residents to prepare for Moke by replenishing essential supplies like food and medicine. Governor Green stated in a video statement, “It could certainly have a big impact because we’ve already been hit hard.” He also authorized 100 hotel rooms for those needing safe shelter. Meteorologist Casey Oswant of the National Weather Service anticipates that while Moke will likely be less severe than Lala, impacts are still expected on the windward and southeast sides of the Big Island. The NHC forecasts rainfall totals of 130-250mm (5-10 inches) with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 380mm (15 inches). Eastern Maui is also likely to receive significant rainfall, between 76-150mm (3-6 inches).

Continued Weather Concerns

Governor Green cautioned that the current storms are part of a pattern. “Everyone be very careful,” he said. “This storm will be followed by another storm front about a week later, and we continue to see the impacts of these major weather fronts that have hit Hawaii.” Oswant projects Moke will continue on a westward path near the islands through early Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Moke is expected to pass Hawaii Island overnight, with continued rainfall projected for the coming days. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant as another storm front is anticipated within the next week.
