Russia Issues Warnings Over Ship Interceptions Near UK Coast

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Recent interceptions of vessels linked to Russia by British and European Union naval forces have prompted a strong response from Moscow, including thinly veiled threats of reciprocal action. The escalating tensions stem from concerns over sanctions evasion and potential military supply routes, highlighted by the June seizure of the Smyrtos oil tanker by Royal Marine Commandos in a six-hour operation off the UK coast.

Escalating Tensions at Sea

The incident involving the Smyrtos is part of an ongoing pattern of confrontations between NATO forces and vessels suspected of circumventing sanctions imposed on Russia. The seizure, conducted by Royal Marine Commandos, involved boarding and securing the tanker, raising concerns in Moscow about perceived aggression. This event has triggered a series of warnings from Russian officials regarding potential retaliation against ships intercepting those with ties to Russia.

The situation remains tense as NATO continues to monitor and potentially intercept vessels suspected of violating sanctions, while Russia maintains its stance against what it views as hostile actions.
