South Carolina Senate Race

South Carolina Republicans are voting for a second time this year to select their nominee for the US Senate seat previously held by Senator Lindsey Graham, who died unexpectedly after winning the June primary. The run-off pits Darline Graham, appointed to fill her brother’s current term, against Representative Ralph Norman, a five-term congressman. Darline Graham led the August 11 special primary with approximately 33 percent of the vote, while Norman received around 25 percent; she performed strongly in central and coastal areas of the state, while he found support in the Piedmont and Upstate regions. She has received endorsements from Senator Tim Scott and former President Donald Trump.

Oklahoma Governor and Senate Primaries

In Oklahoma, Republicans are deciding a competitive gubernatorial primary to replace term-limited Governor Kevin Stitt, with State Attorney General Gentner Drummond facing off against former state Senator Mike Mazzei. The race has been marked by significant personal spending from both candidates, with Mazzei loaning his campaign over $11 million compared to Drummond’s $3 million; however, Drummond has received more in overall campaign contributions. Trump endorsed Mazzei before the primary but his endorsement is not a guarantee of victory. Democrats will also select their nominee for US Senate, where nurse N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas and lawyer Jim Priest are competing in a run-off after neither secured a majority in the initial primary.

Georgia Congressional Special Election

A special election is being held in Georgia’s 13th Congressional District to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Democratic US Representative David Scott. The race features Everton Blair, former Gwinnett County School Board Chairman, and Marcye Scott, daughter of the late congressman; Marcye Scott received about 46 percent of the vote in the initial all-party special election on July 28, while Blair garnered 38 percent. The winner will serve out the remainder of David Scott’s term but neither candidate is running for a full term beginning in January.

Statewide Ballot Measures in Oklahoma

Oklahoma voters are also considering two statewide ballot measures. State Question 846 would add a voter identification requirement to the state constitution, while State Question 844 concerns reimbursements to local governments related to property tax revenue and manufacturing incentives.

Polls close at 7 p.m. Eastern Time in all three states, with results expected later Tuesday evening as election officials begin counting ballots.
