Israeli Settlers Surround Palestinian Home, Set Fires in West Bank Village

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Israeli settlers, reportedly backed by Israeli forces, have surrounded a Palestinian home in the village of Qusra, south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, trapping at least four Palestinians inside. Settlers have also set fire to nearby land, while simultaneously besieging multiple homes and restricting movement within the area, according to reports from Al Jazeera journalists on the ground. The escalating violence has left residents cut off from essential resources and living in constant fear of attack.

Escalating Violence and Siege

Qusra has experienced a significant increase in settler violence over the past month, including the arson of a mosque in July. Since August 9th, settlers have besieged three Palestinian homes in the Ras al-Ain area, cutting off access to water, electricity, and other essential supplies. Residents report being unable to freely enter or exit their homes, with even basic necessities requiring coordination through the village mayor and taking days to secure approval.

Restricted Movement and Military Blockades

Israeli forces have declared the area a closed military zone, further restricting Palestinian movement in and out of Qusra. A gate has been placed at the main entrance to the village, forcing Palestinians to take alternative routes that are often blocked by Israeli forces. On Wednesday, the military erected three new roadblocks encircling Ras al-Ain hill, effectively disconnecting homes from the area below.

Residents Describe Dire Conditions

Loui Abu Raideh, a resident trapped in his home, described the situation as a “nightmare,” stating that he and his family have been unable to sleep for 21 days due to constant fear of attack. He explained they are forced to monitor security cameras throughout the night, anticipating potential attacks from settlers. Residents report feeling completely isolated and vulnerable.

Pattern of Settler Attacks

Settler attacks on Palestinian homes, businesses, and farmland have been a recurring issue in the West Bank for decades, coinciding with the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements. These attacks have intensified since Israel launched its military operations in Gaza following the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in October 2023.

Coordination is currently underway to allow ambulances access to the area and evacuate one injured person as the situation remains tense and residents remain trapped within their homes.
