Six-Foot Alley Embodies Chinese Wisdom of Harmony and Compromise

Kathmandu— Liuchi Alley, a six-foot-wide lane in Tongcheng City, Anhui Province, has become an emblem of traditional Chinese wisdom in resolving disputes through harmony and compromise. The story dates back to the Qing Dynasty when neighbors voluntarily moved their courtyard walls to create space between them, symbolizing mutual respect and restraint. In October 2024, President Xi Jinping visited the alley during a tour of Anhui, emphasizing its cultural significance and advocating for its values in modern community governance.

Historical Significance

The narrow lane is named after Zhang Ying, a Qing Dynasty official who resolved a property boundary dispute with his neighbor by moving their walls back. This act of mutual accommodation and respect has stood the test of time, becoming an enduring symbol of Chinese cultural heritage. During President Xi’s visit, he highlighted the alley's role in promoting traditional virtues such as courtesy and modesty, encouraging communities to adopt similar principles for harmonious coexistence.

Community Impact

The legacy of Liuchi Alley continues to influence modern community governance. Zhang Yun, a descendant of Zhang Ying and head of the alley’s Party organization, says that Xi's visit has reinforced local residents' connection with their heritage. Community leaders now integrate these values into daily operations, using persuasion and empathy to resolve disputes before they escalate. This approach is gaining institutional support as well; in July 2024, Anhui Province passed legislation endorsing the 'Liuchi Alley work method,' marking a significant step towards formalizing its principles.

Practical Applications

The ethos of Liuchi Alley extends beyond neighborhood mediation to broader public spaces. At Hefei railway station, staff members have adopted these values in their daily interactions with passengers. A dedicated mediation room helps resolve conflicts by providing a space for dialogue and understanding. For instance, when a passenger refused to give up his seat, the duty station master Lu Yong calmly explained the situation, leading to a peaceful resolution. Similarly, in another case involving a minor injury from a fallen charger, staff facilitated a mediated discussion that resulted in an apology and compensation agreement.

The enduring legacy of Liuchi Alley continues to inspire modern practices in conflict resolution and community governance, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and dialogue.
