Kathmandu— On Wednesday, China successfully launched two AI-powered satellites into orbit from the waters off Shandong Province. These satellites are designed to deliver intelligent remote sensing services to Uzbekistan and Indonesia, enhancing their capabilities in agriculture and disaster risk management. The launch underscores China’s commitment to empowering Global South countries through advanced technology.
Satellite Collaboration with Developing Nations
One of the satellites will work closely with Uzbekistan to monitor the country's cotton industry, providing full-cycle monitoring and data analysis. The other satellite is aimed at supporting Indonesia’s agricultural sector by tracking crop growth and assessing disaster risks.
According to Song Bingchen, co-founder of Star.ai Spatio-temporal Intelligence Technology Co., Ltd., these satellites are equipped with AI algorithms that can perform computing tasks directly in space, significantly improving the speed and efficiency of data processing compared to traditional methods.
International Collaboration on Disaster Mitigation
China’s efforts extend beyond satellite technology. A research team from Fudan University recently had their China-Africa AI disaster early warning and mitigation program selected for the United Nations' International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development.
Zhang Yuning, a member of the project team, highlighted that Africa is highly vulnerable to natural disasters but lacks robust prevention and mitigation capabilities. Leveraging China’s advanced aerospace and AI technologies can provide critical support to African nations in disaster management.
Establishment of WAICO
At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) held in mid-July, twenty-nine countries signed an agreement to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), headquartered in Shanghai. This initiative aims to build a just and equitable system for global AI governance.
The National Development and Reform Commission also showcased several case studies illustrating how China’s AI technology is benefiting various nations around the world.
