Kathmandu— A US judge in New Mexico has ordered social media giant Meta to pay another $567 million as part of a lawsuit over the company's failure to warn users about the dangers its platforms pose to children. This ruling, which adds to an earlier $375 million fine, marks the largest child safety judgment against Meta.

Judge's Ruling

In his decision, Judge Bryan Biedscheid described Meta as a 'public nuisance' similar to air pollution and mandated that the company allocate the funds into a trust aimed at mitigating future harms. The judge likened Meta’s operations to those of a factory where advertising and content are its products, with psychological harm and sexual exploitation of children being the resulting 'pollution'.

Meta's Response

The BBC has contacted Meta for comment on this latest ruling. In response to an earlier $375 million verdict in the same case, Meta had stated its intention to appeal the decision.
