China Accelerates Nationwide Fitness Campaign to Integrate Health and Sport

Kathmandu— China is rapidly integrating fitness and healthcare services through a nationwide movement designed to promote safer, scientifically grounded lifestyles for its citizens. Driven by long-term national strategies like Healthy China 2030, the country is expanding public sports facilities and establishing ’15-minute fitness circles’ to bring exercise opportunities directly into local communities. This transformation seeks to shift the national healthcare focus from treating illness to preventing it by combining structured physical activity with professional medical supervision.

A Shift Toward Preventative Health

The transformation is increasingly visible in the way citizens approach physical activity. In cities like Nanjing, elderly residents who once feared the risks of exercise are now using treadmills under the supervision of fitness coaches and medical staff. This model combines structured exercise with healthcare services to ensure safety for vulnerable populations.

This shift reflects a broader policy direction aimed at proactive health management. In 2024, President Xi Jinping reiterated the importance of integrating national fitness with health initiatives to build a healthy nation. The government’s National Fitness Plan for 2026-2030 aims to have approximately 40 percent of the population participating in regular exercise by 2030, while increasing per capita sports facility space to four square meters.

Expanding Urban Accessibility

To make fitness more accessible, China is repurposing urban spaces such as rooftops, former industrial sites, and areas beneath elevated highways into multifunctional parks and gyms. In Wuxi, a 6.4-hectare area under highways has been converted into a fitness park, while Xining has utilized spaces beneath bridges and former factories to host hundreds of table tennis courts and shared gyms.

Digital integration is also playing a key role in increasing participation. In Shenzhen, an online reservation system for over 2,150 public sports venues has facilitated more than 65 million visits. Additionally, the rise of artificial intelligence is introducing smart gyms and AI-powered coaching systems to provide more personalized and precise exercise experiences.

Grassroots Momentum and Cultural Impact

The movement is gaining significant momentum through grassroots leagues and mass-participation events. In Jiangsu, the amateur ‘Su Super League’ football competition has grown from a local tournament into a national phenomenon, inspiring similar leagues in nearly 20 other regions. This culture of participation extends to winter sports, which saw participation jump from 300 million to 346 million people following the momentum of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Experts note that the public is moving from simply following routines to understanding the science behind healthy habits. “The public is moving from simply following exercise routines to understanding why they exercise, how they should exercise and how to maintain healthy habits,” said Zheng Jiakun, a professor at Shanghai University of Sport. This shift is supported by a growing network of over 3.9 million social sports instructors and volunteers nationwide.

The initiative continues to expand through creative social media campaigns and specialized medical clinics dedicated to weight management and personalized health plans.
