Kathmandu— The United Arab Emirates has extradited alleged Irish cartel boss Daniel Kinahan, 49, who is expected to appear in court in Dublin charged with leading a transnational criminal organization. Kinahan was transported aboard an Irish government jet on Sunday following a final ruling by the Dubai Court of Cassation and under an extradition treaty between the UAE and Ireland. His arrest in Dubai occurred in April based on an Irish warrant for serious organized crime offenses, after he had resided openly in the emirate for approximately ten years.

Kinahan's Alleged Criminal Network

In 2022, US authorities identified Kinahan as one of three leaders of the Kinahan Organized Crime Group (KOCG), which is alleged to be involved in drug trafficking, money laundering, firearms trafficking, and murder. The group has reportedly expanded from Dublin’s streets to become a global criminal enterprise with connections to South American cartels, Chinese mafia groups, and Hezbollah. US authorities imposed sanctions on Kinahan and his family members, offering a $5 million reward for information leading to their arrests.

Joint Statement Highlights Significance

A joint statement released by the justice ministers of both Ireland and the UAE described Kinahan as “one of the most wanted individuals in cases related to transnational organised crime.” The statement detailed accusations against him, including leading an organized criminal group, murder, and illicit narcotics trafficking, all stemming from a formal request by Irish authorities. Both Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan and his UAE counterpart, Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, stated that the extradition sends “a clear message” that those suspected of serious crime will not find refuge.

Security Preparations in Dublin

Irish media reports indicate a significant security operation is underway to prepare for Kinahan’s arrival. This involves armed police, military personnel, and prison authorities. He is expected to be taken directly to the Special Criminal Court before being transferred to Portlaoise Prison, a high-security facility.

Precedent Set with Previous Extradition

Kinahan is not the first senior member of the cartel extradited from Dubai; Sean McGovern, described as a senior lieutenant in the organization, was also extradited from the UAE following his arrest in 2024. He received a 24-year prison sentence in June after pleading guilty to directing organized crime and attempted murder. Irish police estimate the Kinahan group’s wealth exceeds one billion euros ($1.15bn), and the organization has been embroiled in a long-running, violent feud with the rival Hutch gang.

Kinahan had previously denied allegations of being a crime boss; his lawyer told the BBC in 2021 that he had no criminal record or convictions and refuted claims against him. He is expected to appear before the Special Criminal Court later on Sunday.
