Kathmandu— Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with medalists from the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow on Sunday, congratulating them on their performance and sharing a message of support for Indian athletes. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi, following which he shared a video of the interaction on social media. During the gathering, Modi led the athletes in chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” three times.
Athlete Recognition and PM's Message
Sakshi Chaudhary, a gold-medal winning boxer from the Games, spoke in a video shared by the Prime Minister, expressing pride at being invited to meet him and describing him as humble. She then prompted Modi to address the athletes, to which he responded with the phrase “Jo khelega, woh khilega” (The one who plays, will blossom), adding his support with the hashtag #Cheer4Bharat.
Glasgow Games Performance
India concluded its campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. This performance secured India’s fourth-place position in the overall medal standings. The games lasted eleven days and saw Scotland formally pass the Commonwealth Games flag and baton to India.
Ahmedabad Set to Host 2030 Games
During the closing ceremony of the Glasgow Games, Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi accepted the flag and ceremonial baton on behalf of India. Ahmedabad is set to host the landmark centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, making it the second Indian city to stage the event after New Delhi hosted in 2010. Despite fielding a smaller contingent (122 athletes) and competing in fewer sports compared to the Birmingham 2022 games, India maintained its fourth-place finish with a strong medal conversion rate.
With the handover ceremony completed, preparations are now focused on Ahmedabad as it prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
