Trump's comments came as talks between Iran, Oman, and the US aimed at reopening the vital shipping route remain stalled, with Tehran demanding the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade and withdrawal of American forces.

Economic Pressure on Iran

Trump stated that Iran is “in very bad shape” economically, claiming the country lacks sufficient funds to compensate its military personnel. He also asserted that a U.S. naval blockade has intensified these economic difficulties for the Iranian regime. Despite this pressure, Trump noted falling oil prices – currently slightly above $75 per barrel – have mitigated the impact of the situation on American consumers.

Stalled Negotiations and Conditions

Negotiations between Iran, Oman, and the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz are currently stalled. Tehran has introduced new conditions for resuming talks, including a demand for the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade and the withdrawal of American forces stationed near Iranian territory. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that direct negotiations with Washington are not presently underway, stating they are only communicating through intermediaries.

US Military Preparedness

The U.S. Department of Defense recently requested American defense contractors to accelerate weapons production and delivery schedules. A memo from Deputy Defence Secretary Steve Feinberg asked industry leaders to submit plans within 21 days for “significantly faster, more aggressive delivery schedules and/or increased production for critical capabilities,” citing concerns about a potential shortage of munitions linked to conflict with Iran.

The situation between the US and Iran remains fluid as negotiations stall and both sides maintain a watchful stance. Trump expressed optimism that the matter would ultimately be resolved, characterizing it as “like a chess game.”
