Earthquake in Colombia Leaves Over 130 Dead and Hundreds Injured

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia earlier today, resulting in the deaths of at least 132 people and injuries to over 570 others. The quake, which hit around 7:34 am local time near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco area, approximately 280 kilometers west of Bogota, caused significant damage across multiple cities and regions, including Pereira, where 60 deaths have been reported. Emergency services are currently responding to collapsed buildings and suspended airport operations as officials assess the full extent of the devastation.

Widespread Damage and Casualties

The Colombian Association of Capital Cities, following a disaster response meeting with the president, confirmed the rising death toll and injury count. Reports indicate that 86 buildings have collapsed throughout the country, and operations at seven airports have been temporarily suspended. President Abelardo de la Espriella stated that 1,577 residential buildings sustained damage, with an additional 37 completely destroyed, along with impacts to 18 health centers and 52 schools.

Risaralda Department Hardest Hit

The department of Risaralda in western-central Colombia has been identified as the area most severely affected by the earthquake. Juan Diego Patino, Governor of Risaralda, told radio station BluRadio that the region is bearing the brunt of the disaster. Tremors were also felt in several other cities, including the capital Bogota, prompting evacuations of buildings as a precautionary measure.

Government Response and Aid Efforts

President de la Espriella has convened an emergency committee to address the damage caused by the earthquake, pledging government support for those affected. He stated that he would “personally lead efforts” to guide the country through the aftermath of the quake. Bogota Mayor Carlos F Galan announced the establishment of six donation collection points in the capital city, requesting essential supplies such as drinking water, blankets, non-perishable food, hygiene products, and first-aid materials. He also confirmed that 100 rescuers from Bogota are prepared to travel to affected cities to assist with search and rescue operations.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts as concerns remain about potential aftershocks.
