Trump Escalates Rhetoric Against Muslim Candidates Ahead of Midterms

Kathmandu— U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Muslim communities and Democratic candidates from those communities as the midterm elections approach. On Monday, Trump shared an image on Truth Social depicting Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed standing before a crowd including women wearing hijabs, accompanied by the text “They are coming for your home and your belongings.” The post followed earlier comparisons between himself and his wife with El-Sayed and his wife, framing them as representing fundamentally different visions of America. Trump’s comments came after he labeled candidates winning Democratic primaries as “jihadists” and criticized their policy proposals.

Attacks on El-Sayed

Trump's latest attack specifically targeted Abdul El-Sayed, who recently secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan after defeating Representative Haley Stevens in a closely watched primary election. The post on Truth Social followed an earlier image comparing Trump and his wife to El-Sayed and his wife with the caption “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.”

Broader Criticism of Muslim Candidates

Beyond targeting El-Sayed, Trump broadly criticized candidates he described as ‘jihadists,’ claiming they represent a dangerous trend in Democratic primaries. He stated that friends had advised him to use the term 'jihadist' to describe what he sees as radical ideas being proposed by these candidates. “One thing is we have jihadists being elected all over the place,” Trump said, adding his concern about the direction of policy changes suggested by those candidates.

Remarks on Somali Americans

Trump also leveled criticism at people of Somali descent, alleging they lack intelligence and aptitude, and accusing them of attempting to dictate how America should be run. He claimed they have “nothing going” while simultaneously seeking to influence the country’s direction. These remarks preceded his specific targeting of El-Sayed on Truth Social.

El-Sayed's victory in the Michigan Democratic primary represents a significant win for the progressive wing of the party, and Trump's attacks are likely to continue as the midterm elections draw closer.
