Kathmandu— Jharkhand Minister Irfan Ansari on Tuesday defended his state’s response to ongoing student protests over a reported police lathi-charge, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to “hijack” the movement for political gain. The protests stem from concerns regarding government responsiveness to student demands and culminated in a statewide shutdown called by the BJP following Monday's demonstrations in Ranchi, which allegedly involved clashes between students and security forces near the State Assembly. Ansari asserted that the state government supports peaceful protest while condemning what he described as the BJP’s efforts to infiltrate and disrupt the movement.

Allegations of Political Interference

Ansari claimed the BJP attempted to exploit the student protests for its own purposes, stating, “We have clearly stated that we support peaceful movements. However, the way the BJP tried to hijack the students' movement yesterday is not right. They sent troublemakers into the movement to crush it.” He criticized the party’s call for a statewide shutdown, questioning their authority and motives. “They should be ashamed of using children as a shield,” Ansari said. “Who are you to interfere in the students' movement? Who called you?”

Government Response to Protests

The minister highlighted the government’s willingness to address student concerns, claiming significant progress had already been made. “Today, it is the students' demand, and we are supporting them,” Ansari stated. “We want their demands to be met, and we have already fulfilled 95 per cent of them.” He also described a personal visit to Sadar Hospital in Ranchi where injured student leader Devendra Nath Mahto and other protesters were receiving treatment, emphasizing his empathy for the youth and lack of security during the visit.

Clashes and Injuries

Ansari addressed reports of injuries sustained by both students and police forces. He explained that he personally ensured medical attention was provided to injured students after visiting them without any security detail. He also noted that members of the police force had suffered injuries during Monday’s protests, and were receiving treatment as well. The student-led hunger strike has been ongoing for nine consecutive days.

BJP Shutdown and Police Intervention

The BJP called for a statewide shutdown on Tuesday in response to Monday's protest and alleged police brutality. BJP workers blocked Ratu Road in Ranchi, prompting intervention from the Jharkhand Police to clear the roadway. The protests by JPSC and JSSC aspirants initially focused on concerns regarding state government responsiveness and ended with reports of a lathi charge near the Legislative Assembly.

The situation remains tense as student demands continue to be addressed by the government, while the BJP maintains its opposition and calls for accountability. Further developments are expected as negotiations progress.
