Kathmandu— Lebanese firefighters are accusing Israel of intentionally starting wildfires across southern Lebanon, alleging the use of drones and incendiary weapons to ignite forests and agricultural lands since a ceasefire largely halted fighting with Hezbollah in mid-June. The accusations come amid reports of widespread destruction in Israeli-occupied parts of southern Lebanon, including damage to homes, schools, farmland, and infrastructure. Hussein Fakih, head of civil defense in the Nabatieh region, estimates that fires have impacted 30-40% of land in some frontline areas.

Escalating Fire Accusations

Hussein Fakih stated that Israeli forces began setting fires immediately following the ceasefire, claiming drones were used to drop incendiary materials. He also alleged the use of white phosphorus shells and illumination flares fired into woodland areas. On Tuesday, Fakih reported Israeli forces dropped flares over a wooded area outside Khiam, igniting fires, and a drone subsequently struck near firefighters attempting to extinguish the blaze, forcing their withdrawal.

Extent of Damage in Southern Lebanon

A joint investigation by the Financial Times and Lighthouse Reports revealed extensive damage across Israeli-occupied parts of southern Lebanon. The investigation found widespread destruction to homes, schools, farmland, forests, and essential infrastructure. Satellite imagery suggests much of this damage occurred after Israeli forces gained control of evacuated villages in mid-April.

Israeli Buffer Zone and Lebanese Response

By June, Israel reportedly controlled approximately 2,000 square kilometers of Lebanese territory—roughly one-fifth of the country—establishing what officials have termed a security buffer zone. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has repeatedly called for a complete Israeli withdrawal and pledged to restore essential services to allow displaced residents to return.

The situation remains tense as Lebanon continues to demand Israel’s withdrawal from occupied territories and address the ongoing damage caused by both conflict and alleged deliberate fires.
