Kathmandu— Two U.S. Army pilots were killed when their AH-64 Apache attack helicopter crashed in a field near Salado, Texas, at approximately 1:35 p.m. local time on Wednesday, igniting a large wildfire and prompting evacuations. The helicopter was based at Fort Hood military installation and went down in Bell County, with the resulting blaze quickly spreading across roughly 100 acres of grassland. Authorities confirmed both crew members died at the scene, and firefighters are working to contain the remaining flames while ensuring no further injuries occur.

Crash Details And Initial Response

The helicopter crashed into a field in what witnesses described as a violent impact, according to Bell County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cliff Coleman. The crash immediately sparked an uncontrolled grass fire that rapidly spread across the area. Emergency crews responded quickly, working to extinguish lingering fires and assess the damage.

Wildfire Containment Efforts

By 5 p.m. local time, firefighters had managed to contain approximately 45% of the blaze, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Authorities issued evacuation orders for nearby residents as a precautionary measure while containment efforts continued. Footage from the scene showed scattered burning debris and scorched ground.

Apache Helicopter Capabilities

The AH-64 Apache is a highly advanced attack helicopter capable of carrying significant firepower, including up to 16 Hellfire missiles, 76 rockets, and ammunition for its 30mm cannon. The U.S. Army describes the latest AH-64E variant as its most modern version, anticipating decades of continued service.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet released information regarding the helicopter’s origin or intended destination. Local officials confirmed that no civilians on the ground were injured and that the aircraft did not impact any buildings or other structures.

Firefighters continue to monitor the area for hotspots and ensure full containment of the wildfire as investigations into the cause of the crash proceed.
