Kathmandu— A group of dissatisfied leaders within the Nepali Congress (NC) convened a three-day national gathering in Kathmandu this week, emphasizing the importance of party unity to overcome current crises and strengthen democracy in Nepal. The leaders, who expressed concerns about the handling of the recent special general convention and its impact on election results, called for a renewed focus on core principles and a resolution of internal divisions. The event, organized by members critical of the party establishment, aims to foster dialogue and chart a course forward for the NC.

Discontent Over Party Convention

Several leaders voiced criticism regarding the hasty organization of the special general convention, attributing recent electoral setbacks to its flawed execution. NP Saud stated that the convention was rushed due to the ambitions of certain individuals, placing the party in a difficult position. Ramesh Lekhak echoed this sentiment, asserting that the timing of the convention contributed to the current troubles within the NC.

Upholding Party Principles

Bir Bahadur Balayar stressed the importance of adhering to the principles established by BP Koirala, a founding figure of the Nepali Congress, warning against any compromise on these foundational values. Mahalaxmi Upadhyay (Dina) highlighted the need to recognize and appreciate the contributions of senior leaders in advancing the party’s goals.

Seeking Judicial Review

Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat drew a comparison between the special general convention and the Gen Z movement, suggesting a shift in political dynamics. He also expressed hope that the Supreme Court would deliver justice to the entire party, implying potential legal challenges related to recent decisions or processes.

The national gathering is scheduled to continue with closed sessions on Saturday and Sunday, providing a platform for further discussion and strategizing among the dissenting leaders.
