Kathmandu— Support for Germany’s governing coalition, comprised of the Christian Democratic CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party, has fallen to a five-year low, according to an INSA poll published by Bild. The survey revealed that the bloc received just 20% support, placing it behind the opposition AfD party at 28%. This decline comes amid criticism of economic stagnation and unfulfilled pre-election promises, with dissatisfaction among voters reaching high levels. The poll surveyed over 1,200 people across Germany between August 10th and 14th.

Declining Support for Governing Parties

The INSA poll, conducted for Bild am Sonntag, showed a one-point drop in support for the CDU/CSU from the previous week, marking its weakest result since October 2021. The combined support of the two governing parties currently stands at 32%, just four percentage points ahead of the AfD alone. Several key reforms remain stalled due to disagreements within the coalition regarding taxes, welfare, and spending priorities.

AfD Gains Momentum

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) maintained its position as the most popular party in the poll with 28% support—a significant increase from the 20.8% it received in the February 2025 federal election. Despite attempts by mainstream parties to exclude them from governing coalitions, the AfD continues to gain traction, particularly in eastern Germany where regional elections are approaching. Polling data indicates around 41% support for the party in Saxony-Anhalt and 36% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Widespread Dissatisfaction

The poll revealed widespread dissatisfaction with the current government’s performance, with 78% of respondents expressing disapproval. Only 16% reported satisfaction with Merz's leadership. INSA director Hermann Binkert told Bild that “Support has never been so low and rejection so high,” suggesting a potentially irreversible trend as most remaining supporters no longer back the cabinet. Approximately 10,000 people recently protested against the government in Plauen, demanding snap elections and changes to policies related to energy costs, healthcare, migration, and military issues.

The findings of this poll suggest growing discontent with the current German government and a potential shift in political landscape as regional elections loom.
