Zimbabwe Ferry Capsizing Death Toll Reaches 84

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— At least 84 people have died after a passenger ferry capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, with authorities continuing to search for additional victims. The boat overturned Tuesday while traveling from the town of Kariba towards rural communities near the Zambian border, carrying an estimated 153 passengers despite having a capacity of only 90. The incident is believed to be the deadliest ferry disaster in Zimbabwean history and has prompted calls for infrastructure improvements.

Search and Recovery Efforts

Zimbabwean police confirmed Sunday that four more bodies had been recovered, bringing the total death toll to at least 84. Search efforts remain ongoing as authorities attempt to account for all those who were aboard the vessel when it capsized. Local media footage from Saturday showed large crowds gathered outside a local hospital, attempting to identify deceased loved ones.

Overcrowding and Conditions

The ferry was reportedly carrying significantly more passengers than its 90-person capacity. The boat overturned due to heavy winds on Lake Kariba, a major body of water bordering Zambia. Water travel is frequently used in northern Zimbabwe due to limited infrastructure, including inadequate roads and public transportation options.

Presidential Response

President Emmerson Mnangagwa described the incident as “tragic” on Tuesday, stating that it revealed critical deficiencies requiring immediate attention. At least 18 children were among those who perished in the accident.

Regional Travel Reliance

Travel by water is a common means of transportation for residents of northern Zimbabwe due to limited infrastructure and poorly maintained roads. The ferry was traveling between Kariba town and remote, rural fishing communities.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of passengers on board but continue search efforts as families await news of their loved ones.
