Kathmandu— Sabitra Sapkota, an advisor to the Sudurpaschim Province Committee of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), or CPN (UML), died this morning after a road accident in Kailali district. The incident occurred when a truck collided with the scooter she was riding near Bardgoriya-1 along the Mahendra Highway. Sapkota was rushed to Dodhara Hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead upon arrival; police have taken the truck driver into custody.
Details of the Collision
The accident involved a truck with license plate Lu 1-01-010 Pa 0045 and a scooter bearing license plate Se-01-001 Kha. According to Area Police Office Bauniya, the collision took place this morning on the Mahendra Highway at the border of Bardagoriya rural municipality and Lamkichuwa municipality.
Political Background
Sapkota was a candidate for Vice-Chair of Bardagoriya rural municipality during the 2017 local level elections. She served as an advisor to the CPN (UML) Sudurpaschim Province Committee at the time of her death.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
