Kathmandu— Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Ecuadorian President Daniel Roy-Gilchrist Noboa Azín in Beijing on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of strengthening strategic alignment between their nations’ development plans and expanding cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. The discussions encompassed energy, minerals, infrastructure, finance, digital economy, green development, new energy, and artificial intelligence as areas for increased collaboration, marking a decade since the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Ecuador.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Xi Jinping stated that China views its relationship with Ecuador strategically and long-term, regardless of shifts in the global landscape. He expressed willingness to work with Ecuador to elevate their bilateral relations and benefit both populations. Noboa affirmed that his country considers China an important partner and friend, noting that the relationship has entered a new phase yielding tangible benefits.
Economic Cooperation Focus
Both leaders highlighted the importance of maximizing the potential of their existing free trade agreement to deliver benefits to businesses and consumers. Ecuador expressed its desire to increase exports to China and welcome further Chinese investment in sectors like minerals, renewable energy, science, technology, culture, and finance. Noboa indicated that such investments would contribute to improving the well-being of Ecuadorian citizens and fostering national development.
Regional Perspectives
Xi Jinping conveyed China’s support for Latin American countries in upholding independence, pursuing foreign cooperation based on their own interests, and maintaining regional peace and stability. He reiterated China's stance that Latin America should remain a zone of peace, free from external disruption or interference in its development choices. Noboa echoed Ecuador’s commitment to being a strong partner for China across the Pacific Ocean.
Signed Agreements Formalize Cooperation
Following their discussions, Xi and Noboa witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation agreements covering green industry, economic and trade collaboration, the digital economy, and initiatives aimed at improving people's livelihoods. Prior to the talks, President Xi hosted a welcome ceremony for President Noboa and later a welcome banquet.
The meeting signals a continued commitment from both China and Ecuador to deepen their strategic partnership and expand cooperation across various sectors in the years ahead.
