Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Elected President of Bangladesh

Kathmandu— Members of parliament in Bangladesh have elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the next president, following the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The 78-year-old Alamgir, representing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), secured victory after a parliamentary vote on Thursday, defeating Oli Ahmed of the opposition alliance. This election marks the first contested presidential vote in Bangladesh in 35 years, occurring after recent political shifts that saw the BNP return to power following youth protests and Sheikh Hasina’s departure.

Political Transition Following Protests

The election follows a period of significant political change in Bangladesh. After widespread youth-led demonstrations in 2024, the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina fell from power. The BNP subsequently won a two-thirds majority in parliament during the February general election and appointed Tarique Rahman as prime minister. Hasina herself fled to India but has stated her intention to return home in December.

Shahabuddin’s Resignation and Constitutional Requirements

The need for a new president arose after Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned late last month, citing health concerns two years before the end of his term. The Bangladeshi constitution mandates that a new president be elected within 90 days of a vacancy, prompting Thursday's parliamentary vote. Shahabuddin’s resignation came amidst increasing pressure from opposition parties and while he was considered a close ally to Hasina.

Alamgir’s Political Background

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been a prominent figure in Bangladeshi politics for decades, joining the BNP in the early 1990s. His entry into political life began during his time as an economics student at Dhaka University, where he became a key leader in the 1969 uprising against Pakistani military rule. He served as local government minister most recently and has previously held portfolios including agriculture, aviation, and tourism. Alamgir stated before the vote, “I dream of a happy, prosperous and welfare-oriented state where marginalised communities, hard-working people and daily wage earners can afford meals twice a day.”

Role of the Presidency

While largely ceremonial, the president of Bangladesh serves as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Alamgir’s election signifies a shift in leadership following a period of political upheaval and sets the stage for a new chapter in Bangladeshi governance.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is expected to formally assume the presidency in the coming days, marking a transition in leadership after recent political changes and the resignation of his predecessor.
