Iranian President Calls for End to War with US ‘From Position of Strength’

Kathmandu— Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for an end to the ongoing conflict with the United States, stating that Tehran currently holds a position of strength. The call comes amid stalled diplomatic efforts and continued disruptions to shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Pezeshkian made the statement during a meeting with doctors on Friday, accusing the US of attacking Iranian infrastructure and garnering international condemnation. While asserting Iran’s strength, the country's military leadership simultaneously warned it remains prepared to respond forcefully to any new threats.

Seeking Resolution Amidst Conflict

Pezeshkian emphasized the need to end the war “now as we are in a position of power and dignity.” He claimed global recognition of Iran’s success, alleging that America has violated international regulations by targeting schools, hospitals, and infrastructure. The president also defended a recent memorandum of understanding with Washington against criticism from hardliners within Iran's parliament, asserting it contained no concessions to the US.

Military Preparedness Remains High

Despite the call for an end to hostilities, Iranian military leaders have signaled continued readiness for conflict. Major-General Ali Abdollahi, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, stated that Iran's armed forces would deliver “crushing, punishing and devastating responses” to any new threats, citing preparedness across all domains – land, sea, air, air defence, and cyberspace.

Strait of Hormuz Tensions Persist

The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of tension, with Iran continuing to partially restrict access while the US maintains a naval counterblockade. Reports suggest the US Navy is secretly facilitating the passage of tankers through the strait, enabling the export of between five and ten million barrels of oil daily. Oman has been involved in diplomatic efforts, with its foreign minister discussing ways to resume dialogue with his Iranian counterpart.

International Reactions Diverge

US President Donald Trump expressed skepticism about Iran’s willingness to negotiate, stating that Tehran is not yet ready to make “the right deal.” He also warned of economic consequences for any country offering support to Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans for a sanctions campaign intended to “collapse” the Iranian government, while China criticized the US measures, urging a political and diplomatic resolution.

The planned imposition of new US sanctions is expected on Monday, marking a shift towards economic pressure as the conflict approaches its six-month mark. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the sanctions as “economic terrorism.”
