Kathmandu— A six-year-old Palestinian-British girl, Saja El-Khawas, has died in hospital days after her parents and sister drowned off the coast of Shoreham, Sussex, on Tuesday, according to local police. Her father, Hassan El-Khawas, 55, her mother, Zeina Alayn, 37, and her 14-year-old sister, Sara El-Khawas, all died at the scene after getting into difficulty in the water while visiting the beach during a heatwave. Police are investigating the incident as a tragic accident with no indication of third-party involvement.
Family’s Beach Visit
The el-Khawas family resided in London and had traveled to Shoreham to visit the beach amidst the United Kingdom's recent heatwave. The Daily Telegraph reported that the family originally came from the Rashidieh refugee camp in southern Lebanon, with Hassan El-Khawas having previously lived there as a refugee.
Investigation Underway
Sussex police confirmed Saja’s death on Friday and stated that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drownings remains open. Authorities currently believe the incident was a “tragic accident” and have found no evidence of foul play.
Community Mourns
The Palestinian Forum in Britain held a gathering on Thursday to commemorate the el-Khawas family, recognizing the profound loss felt by the community. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously described the incident as a “terrible family tragedy.” Drownings have increased across Europe as people seek respite from the ongoing heatwave, with reported incidents occurring in France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
The investigation into the exact circumstances of the drownings is ongoing, and authorities continue to treat the case as a tragic accident.
