Kathmandu— High-level talks between Pakistani and Iranian leaders held in Tehran this week appear to have yielded progress toward de-escalating the US-Iran conflict, according to a statement released by the Pakistani military. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir held meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei. The Pakistani military described the trip as part of its ongoing efforts to resolve the US-Iran conflict and promote regional stability.

Focus on Islamabad MoU

During the meetings, both sides reviewed steps needed to restore the “Islamabad MoU,” an interim framework mediated by Pakistan aimed at ending the war. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated via social media that constructive talks were held on all issues and that significant progress was made, expressing hope for continued momentum towards lasting peace. The MoU, initially signed on June 17, had faltered due to renewed ship seizures and strikes in the Gulf before expiring last week.

Iranian Concerns and US Approach

President Pezeshkian reportedly told Munir that the United States must change its approach towards Tehran, stating that Washington should correct its tone rather than resorting to coercion. According to Iranian media outlet Tasnim, Pezeshkian warned that continued US “intimidation” would complicate efforts to implement the MoU.

Regional Tensions and Economic Threats

The diplomatic push comes amid heightened regional tensions. The Trump administration has recently threatened severe economic penalties against any country supporting Iran, while Tehran has warned of completely shutting down Gulf oil exports in response. Discussions also focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supplies.
