Kathmandu— Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is seeking to address strained relations with the United States by establishing a direct communication channel with former President Donald Trump, according to CNN Brasil. This move comes after months of rising tension between the two countries, fueled by disagreements over trade and political issues, including US criticism of Brazil’s handling of its recent elections and the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Lula reportedly aims to diminish the influence of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whom he has accused of being hostile towards Latin America.

Escalating Trade and Political Disputes

Tensions between the US and Brazil have been building for months, stemming from Trump’s strong support for Bolsonaro during his legal battles following the 2022 election. Bolsonaro was sentenced to over 27 years in prison in September after being convicted of attempting to overturn the election results. Trump characterized this prosecution as a “witch hunt.”

The two nations are also embroiled in a trade dispute, with the US imposing a 25% tariff on certain Brazilian goods in July following an investigation that alleged unfair practices. Rubio has been particularly critical of Lula’s government and its policies.

Lula's Direct Appeal to Trump

Frustrated by what he perceives as hostile actions from elements within the US government, Lula reportedly contacted Trump last week requesting direct communication “without intermediaries.” He described his conversation with Trump as “very civilized and very respectful,” while expressing concern over the behavior of those he considers to be lower-level officials. Lula suggested that Trump demonstrates stronger diplomatic skills than his advisors.

Rubio's Open Hostility

Marco Rubio has openly displayed antagonism towards Lula’s administration, excluding Brazil from a list of friendly countries in June and citing the upcoming October election as a factor. He accused Lula of prioritizing personal ego over securing a trade agreement, justifying the tariffs as a consequence. In response, Lula labeled Rubio “anti-Latin America” and an opponent of Cuba and other Latin American nations.

Following his conversation with Trump, Lula expressed hope for improved relations despite ongoing disagreements at lower levels of government; however, it remains to be seen whether this direct channel will effectively address the underlying tensions between the two countries.
