Kathmandu— Recent heavy rains have caused widespread disruption to transportation networks in Nepal, with landslides, flooding, and debris blocking roads in eight districts as of 10:00 am today. Police report that road sections in Kavrepalanchok, Sindhuli, Makawanpur, Nuwakot, Ilam, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, and Rukum West are affected, prompting temporary or complete closures to ensure public safety.
BP Highway Restrictions
The BP Highway, a vital route through Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli, has implemented restricted operating hours due to the risk of flooding. Vehicular movement is halted between 6:00 pm and 4:00 am daily, but allowed during daylight hours from 4:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Kanti Lokpath and Tokha-Chhahare Closures
Authorities have prohibited all vehicle traffic on the Kanti Lokpath in Makawanpur between 5:00 pm and 5:00 am. Similarly, the Tokha-Chhahare road section in Nuwakot is closed to all but essential service vehicles from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.
Complete Road Blockages Reported
Several key routes are completely impassable due to landslides and river erosion. The Mechi Highway in Ilam Municipality-9 is blocked by muddy conditions, though an alternative route exists. A landslide on the Araniko Highway in Sindhupalchok, combined with debris from the Khahare River, has fully obstructed traffic since August 21. Further west, the Trishuli–Mailung–Syafrubesi road section in Rasuwa is blocked after erosion undermined the roadway. The Jajarkot-Dolpa route of the Bheri Corridor in Rukum West remains closed due to a debris flow.
Police Issue Travel Advisory
Nepal Police have issued an advisory urging caution for those traveling on affected roads, citing increasing risks due to ongoing rainfall and potential further disruptions. Authorities are monitoring conditions closely and working to clear obstructions where possible.
The situation remains fluid as rains continue, and authorities will likely provide updates on road openings and closures as conditions change.
