China Issues Orange Alert as Two Typhoons Approach Coast

ABC NEWS
९ भदौ २०८३, मंगलबार   १० : ४५   बजे

Kathmandu— China’s meteorological authorities upgraded the national typhoon alert to orange, the second-highest level in its four-tier system, on Tuesday as two typhoons – Narra and Saudel – approach the country's coastline. Typhoon Narra is expected to land between late Tuesday night and Wednesday, impacting Hainan, Guangxi, and Guangdong provinces, while Saudel may hit the coast from Zhejiang to Fujian provinces between late Thursday night and Friday morning. The National Meteorological Center (NMC) forecasts heavy rainfall across multiple regions as a result of the approaching storms.

Typhoon Narra's Projected Path

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, Typhoon Narra was situated over the Beibu Gulf, approximately 65 kilometers west-northwest of Dongfang City in Hainan Province. The NMC predicts that Narra will move northeastward at a speed of 5 to 10 km per hour, closely skirting the northwest coast of Hainan before making landfall between southeastern Guangxi and the western Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong Province. Authorities anticipate a rapid weakening of the typhoon following its arrival on land.

Saudel's Trajectory and Potential Impact

Typhoon Saudel was located over the northwest Pacific Ocean, roughly 920 kilometers east of Taiwan, as of 11 a.m. Tuesday. The NMC expects Saudel to enter the East China Sea on Wednesday morning before potentially making landfall along the coast spanning from central Zhejiang to central Fujian provinces.

Rainfall Warnings and Recent Landfall

The NMC has issued warnings for torrential rain across parts of Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan provinces between 2 p.m. Tuesday and 2 p.m. Wednesday, with some areas anticipated to receive exceptionally heavy rainfall. This follows the recent landfall of Typhoon Gaenari, which struck Quanzhou in Fujian province around 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

Disaster Relief Efforts Underway

China’s Ministry of Water Resources activated a Level-IV emergency response to flooding in Fujian province on Monday and dispatched a work team to support local disaster relief operations, responding to the heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon Gaenari and potential rises in river water levels.

Authorities continue to monitor both typhoons closely and are preparing for potential impacts as they approach the Chinese coastline.
