Nepal and China Discuss Flood Response After Rasuwa-Gyirong Port Area Devastation

Kathmandu— Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal held telephone talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi today to address the devastating floods that impacted both countries, particularly in the Rasuwa-Gyirong port area. The two leaders expressed condolences for the loss of life and discussed ongoing search, rescue, and relief operations, including efforts to repatriate Nepali citizens stranded in China. The conversation also focused on strengthening cooperation regarding data sharing and early warning systems to mitigate future disasters.

Condolences and Initial Response

Minister Khanal and Minister Wang Yi exchanged condolences for the lives lost due to recent flooding in both Nepal and China, specifically referencing the damage at the Rasuwa-Gyirong port area. The ministers discussed the immediate priorities of search, rescue, and relief operations currently underway in the affected regions.

Stranded Nationals and Humanitarian Aid

The conversation included a focus on the repatriation of Nepali nationals who are currently stranded in China as a result of the flooding. Minister Khanal also expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for providing emergency humanitarian relief support to Nepal following the disaster.

Strengthening Disaster Preparedness

Both ministers agreed on the importance of enhanced coordination in sharing real-time hydro-meteorological data between their respective countries. They also discussed strengthening mechanisms to develop more effective early warning systems, aiming to improve preparedness for future extreme weather events.

The two foreign ministers affirmed their commitment to continued cooperation in disaster management and mutual support during times of crisis.
