Matt Johnson’s ‘Tony’ Offers Warm Portrait Of Young Anthony Bourdain

Kathmandu— Writer-director Matt Johnson’s “Tony” is a character-driven coming-of-age story inspired by a portion of Anthony Bourdain's memoir. The film centers on a nineteen-year-old Bourdain (Dominic Sessa) during the summer of 1975, as he takes his first restaurant job as a dishwasher at a Cape Cod seafood joint called the Flagship in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Through interactions with the colorful staff and demanding work, Tony begins a journey of self-discovery and learns valuable life lessons about humility, connection, and respect. The film explores how this brief but intense period shaped the renowned chef and storyteller he would become.

A Summer Of Hard Lessons

The film portrays Tony as initially spoiled and unlikeable, a “narcissistic, self-destructive” young man in need of guidance. He quickly finds himself out of his depth amongst the seasoned kitchen staff at the Flagship, including the charismatic Sal (Leo Woodall), the boisterous Stavros (Stavros Halkias), and the stoic Tyrone (Michael Jibrin).

A series of humbling experiences—from failing basic tasks to being exposed as a liar about his skills—force Tony to confront his privileged upbringing and lack of genuine work ethic. He is initially thrown out for drunken behavior, but Chef Jose Vatel (Antonio Banderas) offers him a second chance, allowing him to earn his keep by washing dishes.

Mentorship And Unexpected Connections

Chef Vatel serves as an enigmatic mentor figure, offering Tony opportunities for growth while remaining largely reserved about his own life. His unconventional methods—including waking Tony with buckets of seawater—are presented not as cruelty but as a means of toughening him up and instilling discipline.

The film highlights the unexpected bonds formed between Tony and his coworkers during this intense summer period, mirroring similar dynamics in Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” which also stars Dominic Sessa. These relationships provide crucial support and challenge Tony to confront his flaws.

Banderas And Woodall Shine

While Sessa delivers a compelling performance as the troubled young Bourdain, Antonio Banderas is lauded for his portrayal of Chef Vatel, described as full of “quiet, eccentric humor and intense unspoken feeling.” Critics suggest he’s a strong contender for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.

British actor Leo Woodall also receives significant praise for his captivating performance as Sal, a magnetic but dangerous figure who initially serves as Tony's misguided role model. Stavros Halkias adds to the ensemble with his portrayal of the garrulous Stavros.

Finding A Path Forward

Despite the macho posturing and rough environment of the kitchen, the film ultimately emphasizes the importance of overcoming these behaviors in order to mature and develop empathy. The story suggests that Tony’s time at the Flagship was pivotal in shaping his future as a compassionate and discerning figure.

The film is presented not as a comprehensive biography but as a focused exploration of this crucial period in Bourdain's life, demonstrating how he discovered a more meaningful path forward.

“Tony” offers a poignant and touching portrayal of a young man’s journey toward self-awareness and growth, highlighting the transformative power of work, mentorship, and genuine human connection.
