Kathmandu— Following recent incidents trapping individuals within the tunnels of hydropower projects in Rasuwa district, Nepal has mobilized international assistance alongside Nepali Army personnel for rescue operations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the deployment of tunnel rescue experts from India (11 people), China (9 people), and the Republic of Korea, working in coordination with national security agencies. Additionally, a team of 18 forensics specialists from India specializing in DNA analysis has arrived to aid in potential recovery efforts.

International Collaboration on Rescue

Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai stated that unified teams comprised of Nepali security forces and specialized technical experts are currently handling the situation. The government is coordinating for additional expertise and equipment as needed, though an estimate of those still trapped within the tunnels remains unavailable. Nepal has specifically requested international support to address targeted needs such as tunnel rescue and anticipates a significant level of assistance during the reconstruction phase.

Forensic Support and Body Management

In preparation for potential fatalities, the government has received airtight bags for managing bodies, with further deliveries expected. Recognizing the need for thorough identification, Nepal also requested freezers to preserve remains and support for DNA testing, estimating a requirement of around 1000 freezers and numerous personnel for analysis. Rai addressed concerns regarding misinformation circulating in both domestic and international media, clarifying that Nepal has not rejected international assistance.

Diplomatic Outreach

Prime Minister Balendra Shah is directly coordinating and supervising the search, rescue, and relief operations. He engaged in telephone conversations with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani PPM Shehbaz Sharif to discuss the situation. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal also spoke with counterparts and dignitaries from India, China, United Kingdom, South Korea, Australia, Bangladesh, South Africa, Venezuela, and the USA, among others.

The government continues to prioritize search, rescue, and relief efforts, while coordinating with international partners for ongoing support in both immediate operations and future reconstruction.
