This division has been highlighted by recent political actions, including statewide moratoriums in New York and Pennsylvania, reflecting a surge in public disapproval of these facilities.

Public Sentiment Against Data Centers

Recent polls indicate a significant increase in American opposition to local data centers. According to the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Public Policy Center, opposition rose from 49 percent in March to 61 percent by July. An August poll by Heatmap Pro further showed that nearly three-quarters (75%) of Americans are against these facilities, with a majority strongly opposing them.

Political Responses

Politicians have responded swiftly to the public's concerns about data centers. In July, New York Governor Kathy Hochul imposed the first statewide moratorium on new AI data center projects. Following suit, Texas Governor Greg Abbott paused new grid connections pending an audit, while Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed what is being marketed as the nation’s strictest regulatory framework for the industry.
