The shooting unfolded after a woman reported that a man she had a restraining order against was destroying property at her home around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Officer Christopher DeLong arrived on scene and learned the suspect had left, but later spotted him near a vehicle matching the description provided by the woman. Dymock arrived as backup shortly after DeLong initiated a call about a suspicious person. Minutes later, both officers were hit in what Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook described as a confrontation with the suspect.

The Suspect and His Background

The suspect was identified as Adam Tyler Dowdy, a 33-year-old man with a history of arrests across at least four states. He had faced charges including disorderly conduct, contempt of court, public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance, and probation violations. Chief Holbrook stated that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division would investigate the shooting.

Community Response

Chief Holbrook expressed his condolences at a news conference, saying, “Our hearts are broken this evening.” DeLong’s wife praised her husband as the “best dad to our babies” and said she was “living a nightmare.” The chief also emphasized support for the officers, stating, “Let’s pray for this department.”
