Nepalese Leader Calls for National Consensus Post-Disaster

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Ram Bahadur Thapa, parliamentary party leader of CPN (UML), has called for a national consensus to effectively address the crisis following the devastating flood that occurred on August 26. Speaking at today's meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) in Kathmandu, Thapa underscored the importance of coordinated efforts among political parties and experts to manage rescue operations, relief work, and rehabilitation.

Proposed Mechanisms for Crisis Management

Thapa proposed forming an all-party mechanism that includes both political parties and experts. He also suggested creating a special task force under the leadership of the Foreign Minister to coordinate international aid, another integrated special task force under the Defense Minister for rescue and relief work, and yet another special task force under the Finance Minister for overall damage assessment and reconstruction efforts.

Tributes and Empathy

Thapa extended his tributes to those who lost their lives in the flood and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured. He emphasized the need for coordinated and concerted efforts in rescue and relief operations, highlighting the importance of empathy and collective action during such crises.

Sagarmatha Dialogue

Thapa also urged organizing the second edition of the Sagarmatha Dialogue to address the problems Nepal is facing due to the climate crisis. This dialogue would provide a platform for discussing and formulating strategies to mitigate future disasters and their impacts.
